Huuki to lead forestry, mining panel
House names subcommittees to focus on priority issues
State Rep. Matt Huuki will chair the new House Subcommittee on Forestry and Mining as part of an increased effort for lawmakers to hone in on state issues important to creating jobs in Michigan.
The new panel will research state policies and opportunities to recommend potential legislation to the full House Natural Resources, Tourism and Outdoor Recreation Committee, which Huuki was assigned to earlier this month.
“Mining and forestry are the jobs of our past and I believe they will be a large part of the jobs for our future,” said Huuki, R-Atlantic Mine. “There are great opportunities to develop work and employment for people, and we can do it in a responsible way.
“Gov. Snyder mentioned the importance of using and protecting our state’s unique resources to improve Michigan’s economy, and I’ve had discussions with Speaker Bolger about where our efforts could go. I appreciate the great privilege to be leading the fact-finding that will result in the nuts-and-bolts of the committee’s work.”
House Speaker Jase Bolger of Marshall and Rep. Frank Foster of Pellston, chair of the House Natural Resources, Tourism and Outdoor Recreation Committee, made the appointment. Other members of the bipartisan subcommittee are Reps. Peter Pettalia, R-Presque Isle, and Harold Haugh, D-Roseville.
